Academy of the Jewish Berlin

The academy in the former wholesale flower market hall establishes a counterpart to the two existing Jewish Museum facilities. However, the set-back structure of the market hall does not form an urban development equivalent to the Kollegienhaus as the end point of the former Markgrafenstraße. The forecourt of the Jewish Museum Academy links it to the entrance of the Jewish Museum across Lindenstraße. A sequence of squares connects the facilities of the Jewish Museum with Besselpark and southern Friedrichstadt.
The forecourt marks the interface between the grid of Friedrichstadt and the built structures of Köpenicker Vorstadt, which still retains the layout of the agricultural plots formerly located there. The academy podium picks up on the theme of edge closure formulated in the 1984 IBA. The podium and the trimmed trees structure the visual relationship between the academy and the museum without interrupting it. The tilted surface of the podium orients the forecourt towards the academy. The result is an open plaza space aligned with the academy building.
