Firnhaberstraße Nordhorn

Its island location gives Nordhorn’s inner city a unique appeal. Together with the Vechtearkaden and the Winkelhook Passage, Firnhaberstraße is one of Nordhorn’s most important city-centre shopping streets. The main elements of the design are the “guiding strips”, which lead pedestrians towards Hauptstraße while previewing that street’s predominant design element – its distinctive continuous line transecting the island. The “guiding strips” highlight the area’s street furniture while taking on a variety of functions. The bus stops, for example, are integrated into the strips, as are the trees that line the road, the long, topographically mobile benches with larch wood supports and the illuminated stelae. A water table developed especially for Nordhorn makes a water reference at the crossing to Winkelhook. The division into pedestrian and vehicular areas is eliminated, which creates an expansive street for shopping and strolling with distinguished outdoor parking areas for the shops. The existing brick pavement is extended and accentuated with stripes of greywacke.
