Platz der Deutschen Einheit Wiesbaden

Platz der Deutschen Einheit acts as a prelude to the pedestrian zone while connecting the city centre with the Westend district. The guiding urban design concept is to create an ensemble that unites the individual areas of the square and links them to one another. This ensemble comprises three buildings: the events building of the sports hall (which includes commercial space), a commercial building and a combined school and commercial building.
The square is divided into three sub-areas: The traffic square, the highly frequented town square and the neighbourhood square. Staggered green squares interweave the sub-areas with each other and with the street space. The town square, which is also used for outdoor catering, is divided by a long bench. This bench stands on a granite surface with iridescent tones of warm grey, creating a spirited seating atmosphere. The neighbourhood square is designed as a peaceful, green area with a wide range of uses for all generations. The individual frames of flat concrete walls with wooden supports can accommodate a wide variety of uses, from children’s play areas to water basins.
