Deichstreet Cuxhaven

The overarching dike belt forms the spatial backbone and defines a green backdrop along the road space. The existing sidewalk with its water-bound surface is being renovated and defines a panoramic promenade for strolling that stands out from the road space. The softer feel of the promenade surface creates a counterbalance to the stone urban space. In the area of ramps, the surface will be stabilized with a color-coordinated Possehl covering. The existing path width of 3 m will be extended by a 1 m wide concrete strip, thus creating space for additional seating areas and other functions such as lighting and waste bins. With its slightly overhanging gesture and the resulting shadow gap, the edge of the path is given a spatially defined finish.

The existing flood protection wall, which compensates for the difference in height to the adjacent Am Schleusenpriel street, will be largely retained. Information about the history of the site embedded in the concrete surface turns the wall into a kind of history book. Where benches are placed on the dike, the solid concrete wall is interrupted and replaced by a color-coordinated steel frame in light gray. The filling with fine wire mesh ensures maximum transparency. Concrete steps integrated into the green dike embankment allow direct crossings, while recesses in the wall with steps extend the path connection to the harbor side.

At the level of the Alter Deichweg, around the four large existing trees, a large-scale seating area creates an inviting place to relax under the shady canopy. At this point, the dike is lowered by 80 cm to the level of Am Schleusenpriel street, enabling a more direct connection between Deichstraße and the harbor, supplemented by a barrier-free ramp system. The newly created city window faces the Lotsenviertel district and forms a counterpart to the dike window further south with a view of the harbor.
