Urban Development Schwäbisch Gmünd

In the course of the 2014 State Horticultural Show, the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd initiated a far-reaching urban redevelopment plan. Wide swaths of the city centre were rearranged in terms of traffic and substance, historic urban structures were uncovered, new visual axes were formed and expansive open spaces were established close to the city centre. The symbol of this new Gmünd is the reclamation of a central open space: the long-overbuilt estuary where the Josefsbach flows into the river Rems. This confluence is now the bond between Gmünd’s new and existing open spaces, which unfold toward the water to allow residents and visitors alike to experience a diverse interplay of various spatial references and perspectives onto the estuarial waters.
