New construction high school Waldstraße Hattingen
The school grounds are closely intertwined with the Hattingen district. The new school complex takes up this approach and develops an overall concept for the expansion and new construction as a complement to the existing school ensemble. The individual buildings, each with their own identity and functionality, stand freely on the site but are connected to each other—similar to the neighborhood—by the design of the intermediate and open spaces, which offer a high quality of stay.
The open space concept enhances the quality of the environment with unsealed green spaces that connect active and quiet zones. Groups of trees structure the grounds, link old and new buildings, and provide shade for the open-plan schoolyard as a central meeting place. There is a smooth transition from the lively activity zone in the east to the quieter, natural areas in the west with places for learning, gardening, and relaxation. Two smaller courtyards in the north with trees and permeable paving create quiet oases for eating and lingering. The green roof unites the buildings into a harmonious ensemble, improves the microclimate, and is complemented by groups of trees to form a green frame for the schoolyard. Access is clearly organized: deliveries to the cafeteria are made via parking areas outside the schoolyard, while external access to the sports field and restaurant is maintained via separate footpaths and delivery routes.
