Model Project Erfurt New Center South
The two residential areas of Wiesenhügel and Herrenberg in the state capital of Erfurt are separated by a deep valley. The new bridge structure removes this separation and transforms the valley floor into a connecting center. From both elevations, a bridge leads directly to a central square, the future new center. Elevators in the bridge structure ensure that the considerable differences in height can be overcome comfortably and without barriers.
In addition to the short and effective route via footbridges, stairs, and elevators, it is possible to stroll or cycle from Wiesenhügel to the town square without barriers.
The new bridge structure will be visible from afar as an urban landmark of the New Center. The “Höhenweg” bridge structure stands out as a contemporary interpretation of a space-defining truss construction. It is also symbolic as an urban space-defining element that will become part of the skyline of eastern Erfurt. The location of the structure and its light and filigree construction mark the intelligent and effective completion of the road network and give shape to the connecting routes. The structure succeeds in weaving the different heights, locations, and buildings into a whole. The existing buildings are thus brought together to form a new unit. Fusion between structure and open space The bridge structure itself becomes an important open space. Rest areas with benches, viewing points, play and sports facilities are integrated into the structure, creating a multi-coded, three-dimensional open space. At the same time, the bridge structure becomes a multi-storey, vertical garden. Fast-growing climbers such as vines or annual hops use the structure as a support and transform the building into a green garden sculpture.
