Encounter Zone Maaßenstraße Berlin

The mobility revolution is already underway. And with its concept of “encounter zone”, Berlin is leading the way. As a model project, the first Meeting Zone was created in Schöneberg’s Maaßenstraße in 2015. After widespread critique, this concept is now being examined in a more in-depth study. A24 Landschaft is conducting various surveys and formulating evaluation criteria for the public space. Flanked by citizens’ workshops, the goal is to develop and subsequently implement new spatial solutions. The focus is developing a new street-space typology that emphasises spatial justice. While taking into account the linear function of the street as a mobility corridor, it qualifies the street space as a recreational space. This new, multi-coded space offers a variety of possibilities for various user groups. A concrete design solution will be formulated along with principles that can also be applied to other locations.
