Masterplan Lahn Meadow Gießen

Gießen is discovering the Lahn and with it the urban space potentials it had long neglected, in particular the riverbanks close to the city centre with their floodplains and adjacent urban areas. The framework plan aims to develop the banks of the Lahn into a completely new and multifaceted inner-city open space. For quite some time, the river has been regarded purely as a functional space. The Lahn meadows appeared as an inner-city periphery comprising many inaccessible properties. The long-term framework plan covers the entire inner-city river space while pursuing an overall concept aimed at linking the Lahn to the city. Six sub-areas will be interconnected by way of a new, continuous path on either side of the river. The plan includes provisions for the reduction of parking spaces on the banks, the unsealing of surfaces, the renewal and expansion of green spaces, the creation of squares, the establishment of cycle paths along the Lahn, the reclamation of private river properties for public use and the initiation of renaturation measures.
