Nordstadt Bridge – Zu den Mühlen Lahn Meadows Gießen

The public open spaces around the planned Nordstadt Bridge (North City Bridge) constitute an important building block for the development of the banks of the Lahn. They are part of the planned meadow and allotment park that is to extend on both sides of the Lahn. Green corridors will then connect the city of Gießen with the Lahn. The public open spaces around Nordstadt Bridge form the first of these green links. Two initial squares on either side of the Lahn perform as a hinge between the green corridors and the urban districts of Nordstadt and Weststadt. The open meadow area adjoins the squares where the modest groves and fruit trees dating back to the former allotment gardens will be preserved. On both sides of the Lahn, expansive lounge areas with seating elements close off the open spaces to the water.
The area around Klinkelsche Mill has great urban development potential for shaping the cityscape and entrance to Gießen in the direction of the city centre. The redesign of the open spaces and the new Quartier Zu den Mühlen development will transform the area into a premium urban space. To the north and south of Rodheimer Straße, two spacious and distinguished squares form the entrance to Giessen towards the city centre and lead into the neighbourhoods. The area between the squares and the Lahn will see the creation of a green space planted with perennials and featuring a water playground (Auenspielplatz). The area to the north between the planned Zu den Mühlen boulevard and the River Lahn will become home to the Mühlgarten, or mill garden – an attractive, horticulturally designed green space with borders of shrubs and a spacious wooden deck facing the water’s edge.
