Quarter Am Sandhaus Berlin-Buch

The landscape of Barnim – shaped by glacial morphology and primeval relics – informs the Barnum development concept focusing on the Am Sandhaus quarter. The diversity of existing landscape types is preserved and secured for the future, creating a sustainable basic framework within which the new residential quarter can blossom. The overall development plan is based on compact urban settlements with maximal mixing, extensive preservation of wooded areas and the harmonious coexistence of the individual neighbourhoods. Networking proceeds via the open spaces, which also contribute to a coherent configuration of the built structures and help establish a relationship to the landscape. The varied linking of different neighbourhoods along with a landscape of recreational offerings and wilderness lead to a multilayering of Berlin-Buch west and its distinctive urban spaces.
The three neighbourhoods – Spur, Body and Head – each have their own identity, yet see themselves as components of a larger whole. The clear divisions between neighbourhoods make for an unambiguous overall structure while establishing valuable links between the forest in the north and the open landscape in the south. The green links primarily serve to connect biotopes and are intended to foster the undisturbed migration of plants and animals in a new park typology. A looping promenade gives access to the recreational landscape and links it to the individual neighbourhoods.
