IGA Metropole Ruhr 2027 Duisburg

The Duisburg district of Hochfeld is moving closer to the Rhine, piece by piece, by transforming former harbour areas into permeable neighbourhoods and park landscapes. The development, initiated with Rhine Park and the new urban quarter called RheinOrt, will progress and be integrated into a broader context: IGA 2027 will once again stimulate future development while interweaving RheinPark with the neighbouring districts deep into Hochfeld via the Green Ring.
The Green Ring creates an important buffer zone between the densely populated urban neighbourhoods of Hochfeld and the upstream port industry. The landscaped seam proceeds like a ribbon along the porous city edge and reinforces the overriding network of paths.
The Kultushafen on the site of the former train ferry facility forms an important link between the districts of Hochfeld and Wanheimerort. The inaccessible harbour basin will be developed for future recreational use. The new walk-on swimming platform creates a focal point of attention. The sculpted wooden deck functions as a floating garden, green classroom, sundeck, dock for kayaks and a protected paddling pool.
