Neue Mitte Thon Nürnberg

The heart of the Neue Mitte Thon quarter is the newly designed district square. Together with its urban planning fixtures, it forms a striking gateway to the new quarter while establishing an urban anchor point with great appeal. The square is divided into a green half and a stone half, giving it clearly defined linkage points to the variously programmed north-south connections.
Adjacent to the urban axis, the eastern edge of the square is defined as a multifunctional area for temporary events and weekly markets. While the surrounding ground floor zones for food offerings frame the square at a flood-free level, the surface of the square slopes down to the northwest to create a large-scale retention area. Long concrete seating steps mediate the water-level fluctuations. Loose groups of trees comprising multi-stemmed trembling poplars and honey locusts make for shady areas and a comfortable microclimate.
