City Centre Lengerich

The renewal of the pedestrian zone between Bodelschwinghplatz in the west and Wapakonetaplatz in the east traverses the historic city centre in a dynamic open-space trajectory – the newly designed city promenade. The design unity reinforces recognition value and allows easy orientation in the urban space. The variety of ground coverings, with their disjointed juxtaposition at the nexus of widely differing sections, is simplified in favour of a homogeneous materials and patterns. A continuous carpet of concrete pavers from façade to façade creates a new feeling of spaciousness in the cramped urban milieu. A central ribbon of paved brick creates a visual guideline through the city centre: the Lengerich ribbon. With its darker colour and slight recess, it combines diverse functionality such as drainage and the visual and tactile guidance system.
The pedestrian precinct links the three squares of Bodelschwinghplatz, Rathausplatz and Wapakonetaplatz to form an important sequence of spaces within the city centre. Each urban context dictates a highly individual atmosphere, while the squares share the features of a tree canopy and fountain. The consistent design principle embracing the reduction to a few rich materials creates pleasant uniformity and high recognition value.
