LGS Landau 2015
Landau is located in the heart of the Southern Palatinate. As part of the Upper Rhine Rift Valley, the Southern Palatinate boasts a unique cultural landscape, with wine and tobacco cultivation as well as numerous geological features. The grounds of the State Horticultural Show mark the transition from the city to the countryside: It extends from the grounds of the former barracks to the nature landscape of Ebenberg, a fragment of the Rhine Plain’s original landscape. The landscape axis connects the city centre with the Ebenberg nature landscape via the barracks. A 21-metre-high observation tower serves as the landmark at the end of this axis, where the view opens up over both the surrounding landscape and the city of Landau.
The open-space system of the barracks area features two axes: the east-west promenade and the landscape axis with the neighbourhood park. This park stretches between two squares and serves as the central green area of the residential quarter. An expansive lawn with park loungers invites visitors to linger and play. A water basin with water garden forms the link between the promenade and the neighbourhood park and becomes the focal point of the new neighbourhood.
