Energy and Future Storage Heidelberg

Where previously a gas storage facility has ensured the city’s energy supply, Heidelberg Municipal Works is planning a heat storage facility that will advance the local area’s energy transition. The 55m-high building is a new landmark for the city and, as an energy and future storage facility, will also make the energy transition both tangible and accessible. Together with LAVA and white void, A24 Landschaft emerged as the main prize-winner from the planning competition for the design of the façade, gastronomy at the storage facility, the access area and the open spaces of the Energie- und Bewegungspark, or energy and movement park.
The building principle of tilted rings continues into the outdoor space. Variously inclined “energy loops” proceed through the park, circle the structure and spiral dramatically upwards to the publicly accessible roof terrace, which is the highlight of any visit to the energy park. Alongside the rings are seating elements and information boards on the topics of sustainability and energy, which accompany visitors on their thematic circuiting of the loops.
