Theresienstraße and Ludwigstraße Ingolstadt

Theresienstraße and Ludwigstraße form the lively centre of Ingolstadt’s historic old town – both as Bavaria’s first pedestrian zone and as a tourist attraction. The small-scale, medieval town layout is integral to Ingolstadt’s picturesque, historic setting. The typical sequence of individual buildings of varying widths generates a unique code – the “urban code” of Ingolstadt. This specific code becomes the design principle for the redevelopment of eastern Theresienstraße and Ludwigstraße.
The structure of the medieval parcelling is continued in the open space by way of its expression in the paving patterns. The street profile is divided into movement and recreation areas via the resulting pavement strips and a wide central band. The emerging sections relate to the adjacent buildings with clarity. The movement areas allow for long, continuous lines of sight. Passers-by can also move unhindered along the shop windows.
