Ostflügel Offenburg

The design improves the legibility of the city layout while its spatial clarity strengthens the identity of Offenburg’s Old Town. The quality of adjacent areas, including preserved parts of the green ring and the former city wall, was addressed and better defined in terms of design. The existing squares were employed to set special accents in the layout of the Old Town. By means of pointed design measures with attention paid to their particular character, the squares’ function as shared spaces was enhanced to encourage locals and visitors to linger. The redesign balanced historical characteristics with today’s criteria for a liveable city. With the goal of creating green connections critical to microclimate, the tree population was largely preserved and extensively supplemented. Levelling and uniform paving established a more soothing atmosphere in the Old Town and gave the open spaces a more distinguished look and feel.
