LGS Bingen 2008
The closeness and remoteness of the river is experienced through a sculptural formulation of the water’s edge. The shoreline responds to the character of the individual areas: the harbour area, Hindenburganlage, Bingerbrück. In the urban part of the promenade, the most important connections to the city are formulated as so-called Rhine bastions. They give structure and rhythm to the riverside path, whose sculpted edge accommodates various functions (stage, bench, wall, kiosk). Hindenburganlage is integrated as part of the Rhine promenade and opens to the water via an expansive flight of steps with a floating pontoon. In the landscaped part, the shore of the Rhine is flattened to form a park on two levels: a wet park near the bank and a dry park on the former gravel areas of the river. The core area of the horticultural show consists of two segments connected by a central entrance square, ensuring access to the jetties as well as to the congress hall.
