Sonnenhausplatz Mönchengladbach

The history of Mönchengladbach is closely linked to the history of the emergence of the textile industry. Its many textile factories and weaving mills in the 19th century gave the city the nickname of “Rhenish Manchester”. The MG 3.0 master plan ties in with this location-specific past by focusing on the three threads of shopping, culture and nature through the Gladbach Valley area.
The newly emerging Sonnenhausplatz weaves together these three threads. It mediates between consumption and culture, stone and green, business and recreation, while acting as a focal point of connectivity that in future will combine quality of life, openness, multifunctionality and the advancement of progress.
In reference to the erstwhile municipal theatre and its forecourt, Sonnenhausplatz, in the heart of the city, will give rise to a new urban stage and space for special events: the “Stadtpodium”. As such, cultural developments within the city can continue to unfold at a central location.
