Campus Charlottenburg Berlin

The redevelopment of the “Campus Charlottenburg – Hertzallee Extension” area is an opportunity to both create better networking between the various institutes within the Campus Charlottenburg knowledge centre and to activate and strengthen the connection between the campus grounds and the surrounding city. The upvaluation of Hertzallee sets a new course with positive effects that will resonate across all of City West.
Our proposal for the reactivation of the campus area is based on five strategies – Constant, Tidying Up, Connection, Activation and Recombination!
The revival of the former Kurfürstenallee is based on the spatial Constant of the old Lindenallee, which forms the connecting element between Ernst-Reuter-Platz and the Zoological Garden. The rows of trees emphasise the connection between these two important addresses and enhance the avenue character of Hertzallee. Our Tidying Up strategy clears the competition area to the left and right of Lindenallee, thus creating space for something new! The new continuous paving now allows pedestrians to pass comfortably through the area in all directions. The active zones are located in the sunny area of Hertzallee and offer various spatial situations for users – for students and employees of the TU and UdK as well as for visitors to the campus. Within the active zones, pavement slabs comprise the basic format for robust, three-dimensional objects. In stacks of different sizes, they create new spatial situations that vary depending on their location: quiet study niches, active sports areas, group seating areas for effortless communication, plateaus for display cases, workbenches, desks or rows of seats. The system is additive and can be assembled and disassembled as desired.
