BUGA Mannheim 2023

“Mannheim connects” is the motto of the 2023 National Garden Show Mannheim (BUGA). With BUGA Park, the expansive northeast green corridor that has been planned for years receives its first component: the connection from the city centre across the Neckar River and into the landscape. This transition between city and landscape is divided into a varied sequence of urban and suburban open spaces, each with its own unique character: from the Luisenpark – the intensively designed former BUGA site – through the sports park and the nature gardens of Feudenheimer Au, onto the panoramic promenade along the elevated walkway of the former course of the Neckar River and through Spinelli Park to the Vogelstang lakes on the outskirts of the city. In their “rougher” appearance and programmatic openness, the landscaped open spaces of the new BUGA Park form a coherent complement to the BUGA grounds of 1975 while enriching the city of Mannheim with a new type of open spaces.
