Park Mitte Altona Hamburg

Extensive railway tracks dominated the centre of Altona for decades. The gradual abandonment of the railway areas has paved the way for the area’s redefinition as Mitte Altona: Where goods were handled until only recently, green will define its future. The green corridor between the town hall and the railway station will continue beyond the railway station in Mitte Altona. A lively, urban park will form the new district centre. Relics of railway use are preserved and placed in a new context. Through their reprogramming, these historical fragments become self-evident elements of a modern park. Altona will have a spacious and open abundantly green park with a broad range of cross-generational uses. The park is divided into a wide and open park meadow and a border of park promenades featuring small-scale uses. The open coding of the central meadow encourages flexible use as a play, sunbathing and exercise area. Park promenades frame the meadow and mediate its relationship to the surrounding neighbourhood.
