Laboratory and Technology Centre THM Gießen

The new buildings on the campus form an important point of departure for the expansion and further development of the University of Applied Sciences Mittelhessen (THM) in Gießen. In terms of urban planning, the three buildings follow the contours of the master plan while defining a small square in the form of two overlapping rectangles. This versatile mini-campus space forms the heart and communication centre of the university location. A community space, meeting point and place to linger, the square is linked to its surroundings on all sides and is permeable to its neighbouring green spaces. A water feature and seating elements contribute to its appeal as its impulses reach into the university’s existing squares. Its open-space design is based on the design catalogue of the master plan and thus situates the THM’s laboratory and technology centre as part of the campus as a whole. A uniform pavement pattern comprising strips of various dark concrete slabs connects the institution’s buildings from different eras and gives them a shared identity as a campus.
