Seminar- and Bauhaussquare Dessau

From the railway station forecourt to the campus and the residential quarter, various spaces, each with its own requirements and peculiarities, need to be redesigned. Seminarplatz will become the central meeting place for the campus. An island of plane trees adorns the square and offers a wide swath for sitting and resting directly in front of the refectory. A restrained outdoor area is being developed around the Bauhaus buildings that does justice both to its use as a campus and to its visitors. Quiet lawn reliefs with open expanses of grass invite students, staff and visitors to linger and while contributing to the orchestration of the Bauhaus buildings. Bauhausplatz is formulated as a neighbourhood square seeking a deliberate relationship to its neighbour, the Bauhaus. Common to all three locations are the connecting band of asphalt and the edge areas comprising seating elements, each of which is varied and adapted to the character of the particular space. The area where the campus and Bauhaus merge becomes a differentiated outdoor space that nevertheless ensures the necessary cohesion of these disparate areas.
